Crazy jellyfish seashell name plaque

posted by Lara

This plaque is for the niece of My Best Name Plaque Client, Jaime (also a great friend/former co-worker/co-unashamed-lover of poppy dance music). If not for the spawn of Jaime’s family, yours truly would be sorely out of name-plaque-painting practice. As you can see, the challenge here was “jellyfish, seashells, jewels, purple.” The result? Well…let’s just hope young Laura isn’t creeped out by floaty jellyfish who smile as their whiskers (whiskers?) spell her name…

30 Rock’s Liz Lemon Birthday Card

posted by Aimée

Have you ever noticed the giant void in the greeting card industry?  I’ve found it nearly impossible to find 30 Rock-inspired gear, specifically Liz Lemon greeting cards.  Why is that?  She’s chock full of strange, head-scratching witticisms, which in my mind make her a prime candidate for the cynical greeting card genre.   She also reminds me of our good friend, Maxine. Remember her?

With the semi-rotten, goofy, and weird things Liz says, her expressions are well suited to divulge your inner most thoughts to that special someone.  So, go ahead, get lemoned today!  Available on Etsy.  Also — completely customizable!  If you have something specific you would like LL to say, let us know and we’ll make it happen for you.

A Bluejay for Madré

posted by Lara

And now for a change of pace: the Mother’s Day card I made for my Mom, Cynthia. She loves bluejays, she loves music. So I made this completely serious, irony-free card for her.

Because my Mommy is the best.

I’m working on one for my Grandma, too. She just passed away in March, so it’ll be our first Mother’s Day without her. I miss you, Grandma.

George Clooney Birthday Card – A Special Request

posted by Aimée

Yep, that’s right folks, we here at Fortune Cookie Crafts believe that our customers deserve the very best.  And the very best just might be a custom-made card for that special someone.

My good friend Rebecca mentioned that her boyfriend has a secret man-crush on the sexy womanizer, George Clooney.  Who wouldn’t, really?  He’s got those puppy dog eyes that stare deep into your soul, that slightly furrowed brow that captures his sweet concern, and that dimpled chin that just makes you want to poke it lovingly with your fingers (a regular practice at my home; I’m sorry, Babe!).

I went to the drawing board.

Studying his photographs I realized that George is really quite smashing and keeps getting better with age (he turns 50 this Friday, May 6th!).  Here’s hoping Rebecca’s beau can do the very same.  Wink, wink.

“Without Me”

That’s right–the FCC (that’s us! Fortune Cookie Crafts!) won’t let you be, because we’re being sold at yet ANOTHER retail location! This time it’s the fantastically eclectic Logan Square design mecca, Wolfbait & B-girls. Here’s a pretty picture from their website.

If you’re in Chicago, you should go there. Seriously. The super cool owners/designers (Jenny and Shirley) actually make clothes there, in the store. It’s a unique studio/store/fashion house experience. You’ll love it. (And don’t forget to check out out while you’re there!)

Oh and by the way, you can also find us at Lenny & Me. (As if you didn’t know.)

Judith Light & Friendship & Love Card

posted by Lara

I’ve got one word for you.

“Angela!”

Judith Light. Much like Tempestt Bledsoe, this is a name in the vast catalogue of ’80s sitcom actors that always stood out to me. I just learned that Judith Light is Jewish.Do you think that Jewish people named Judith are resentful toward their mothers? If you whisper the word “Judith”, it could sound like “Jewish”. Maybe.

I have another word for you.

“Mona!”

If Mona was Judith Light’s real life mother, she definitely would have named her Judith on purpose. She was saucy like that. I think it’s healthy to have a saucy mother. It keeps you nimble– which is exactly how Angela Bower turned out. How else could she have thrived in the dog-eat-dog world of advertising and still raise such a charming son?

So in all honesty, peeps, I’m still tweaking this card. Henceforth it is not posted on Etsy yet. I’ll keep you posted on the posting, of course, and leave you with a bit of Who’s The Boss? brilliance:

Tony: I’m Tony Micelli. I’m here about the job.
Angela: Oh I’m sorry. There must be a mistake. This job is for a housekeeper.
Tony: That’s me– Mr. Goodmop!
Angela: Well, my mother’s screening everyone. Did you meet her?
Tony: Yeah, yesterday. She gave me the once over. Kicked me in the tires put me up on the rack.
Angela: Well she should’ve checked under your hood ’cause you’re the wrong sex.
Tony: Oh, wait a minute; she said that wouldn’t be any problem.
Angela: My mother didn’t think World War II was a problem.

Fortune Cookie Loves: Abbey Christine

posted by Aimée

Um, can I just say, brilliant??

This is Bob Ross, and if you aren’t familiar with the infamous “happy tree” painter, well then, this is a great way to get to know him.  His amazing coiffure alone is something to talk about.  A little interesting fact about our friendly painter — he was enlisted in the Air Force and was transferred to Alaska where he saw his first snow-laden mountains and the inspiration for many paintings to come.

Bob, and many more silly finger adornments are the work of Abbey Christine, a Chicago-based crafter, who began making our felt friends as a birthday gift for her nephew back in 2005.  She makes finger puppets of her favorite pop culture icons and here’s a sampling of the goods:

Who doesn’t remember this tear-jerking scene in one of our all-time favorite late ’80s rom-coms, Say Anything?

And check out the American country singer-songwriter, dope-smokin’ activist, guitar-toting Willie Nelson, waiting to ride off into the sunset.  Too cool.

And lastly, but certainly not least, Don Draper of Mad Men — doesn’t he just exude sex out of every fiber?  Cigarette dangling, scotch in hand, he’s just waiting to smooth talk his way out of the naughty.

Now tell me you wouldn’t want to own these most darling and daring?  Conversation starter, perhaps.  Entertainment for a crying baby, most likely.  Joy in your heart, endless.

Bea Arthur as Maude. Right on, Mother’s Day!

posted by Lara

Wow! How ’bout that Carol Brady, huh?

Don’t despair. The Mother’s Day fun continues with this Bea Arthur as Maude Mother’s Day Card.

on Etsy.

You know Maude, right? Bea Arthur before The Golden Girls? The show was a little before our time here at Fortune Colby Crafts– it aired from ’72 to ’78 – but I caught some reruns when I was a kid and was totally flummoxed by the way the theme song ended: “Right on, Maude,” Donny Hathaway sings. (I love Wikipedia). I wasn’t familiar with the slang expression “right on” (I’m pushing my glasses up my nose here), so I remember asking my mom what that meant.

Me: Do they mean, like, ‘it all happens on Maude’, like she’s a street?
My mom: No.

The moral of the story: Maude is way cooler than I was or can ever hope to be. Here are some mother f**king fun facts about Maude:

  1. She’s Edith Bunker’s cousin!
  2. She had three husbands with the best dog names ever: Barney, Albert and Chester!
  3. Maude’s first maid was Florida Evans from Good Times!
  4. Maude took tranquilizers and drank every night after dinner! (Finally something in common.)
  5. Seriously though, the television show addressed some very topical issues and themes: abortion (Maude had one just before Roe V. Wade), feminism (Maude and her daughter Carol were!), domestic abuse (Walter hit Maude once and had a nervous breakdown about it), and WEED, of course! (It was the seventies.)

So anyway– what a cool show, first—and second, isn’t Maude the most perfect harbinger of Mother’s Day ever? Don’t you feel liberated just thinking about giving this card to your mom?  If not, just watch this. Be inspired. Right on, Maude! And right on, you, for reading this entire blog post!
